Beth Salem Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Ga

Vultures form a kettle over the church. LOVE!

Beth Salem Presbyterian, also known as Lexington Presbyterian, is one of the oldest established churches in the state but is now in a slow decline due to ever dwindling attendance and support. But it’s still standing tall and the grounds were recently tending when I was there.

While I can wax on about the origins of the place, Historic Rural Churches of Georgia always does a much better job. You can read more about the history and see an interior slideshow here.

This is my favorite grave in the cemetery. Isn’t it lovely? It’s rich with symbolism but the eyes and the look of longing etched on the face are the showstoppers.

Francina McCalla is the only McCalla in the cemetery and it appears that the initials J. W. Mc C carved in the stone are her husband’s.

The small cemetery had more ornate fencing in its space than I’ve ever seen for one that size. There’s another section on the other side of the church as well. Most of the metal has held up beautifully and it’s so diverse in design. I’m working on a whole post about cemetery boundary markings and this is the place that cemented my love of ornate ironworks…

Sleep on, my Little Love.

If you want to explore more in Lexington then I would suggest grab a snack, head over to Shaking Rock Park and spend a few minutes walking about. There’s also the Old Jail and I wrote about it here.
