Do you have a love of weird museums full of old lunch boxes or buttons? Maybe some rusting metal art in someone’s front yard? Delipidated or revitalized churches? Hedges carved into sweeping creations? Bridges with ghosts stories attached? ME TOO! And I want to share them all!

I’m compiling a Google Map of the Athens area and beyond that highlights all quirky shit that Southerners are known for. I might be a bit of a tired and sometimes stodgy Gen-Xer but I can’t ever escape the eccentricities that run in my blood thanks to generations of wild weirdos. Trust me, my interests are built on the foundation of those before who showed me things like: hellfire Baptist preachers and snake handling, drinking swamp water that’s the color of sweet tea, visiting the local hometown mummified dog, running wild with the horses of Cumberland Island, restoring a 76′ AMC Javelin in Cherry Red, and making lard heavy biscuits with my Nana where her knuckle prints in the dough made perfect valleys for salted butter…
Anyhoo, you get the idea. I like oddities. Now let’s get to exploring!
VIEW THE MAP
Use the map to find:
- not one but two moon trees
- one of the only double barrel cannons in existence (big ol’ fat failure)
- a tree that owns itself
- adventures focused on Athens music history such as the REM made famous Murmur Trestle and Weaver D’s Automatic For The People, which is about to close pending his retirement
- tiny museums like this one
- state parks and local parks
- lots of covered bridges
- a faux Stonehenge
- boulders that moved with the push of a pinky
- ghost towns and abandoned buildings
- and more…
And I have a much neglected website Another Southern Roadside Attraction (ASRA for short) that I will revamp soon so take a peek at that if you’d like.
