I was in Vidalia last week (a hop skip jump from Lyons), and while I there I needed to take a break to clear my head and stretch my legs. A quick search led me down a nearby dirt road to this church and cemetery, and I spent a few minutes walking about, swatting away mosquitoes, avoiding fallen tree limbs and dodging red ant hills. Very much worth it!

There have been some fairly recent burials with modern granite markers but the majority of the gravestones are old and handmade. Look at that Masonic symbol! Also: lots of wooden markers and even a wildly rusting enamel pot or two.

Sadly, the hurricane from last year, the one that surprised us all with its power, came up through here and there is a lot of damage to the overall area. Including this cemetery. It looks like a number of stones toppled under falling trees and there are new cracks in some of the standing stones but the church appears to have little-to-no damage.

Another baptismal pool find! This one you could definitely just walk down into and it was full of clear, clean water. Maybe a spring? Or maybe the church has been used more recently that I thought. The tiny American flags and the fake flowers at the graves aren’t too faded…
